EXPLORATION

Once a secure base has begun to be established, exploration can begin. Exploration requires some sense of safety and security. Exploration may begin very early during treatment or even during the assessment, as long as safety (physical, emotional, and psychological) and security are present. As the secure base is deepened, so then can exploration go deeper and healing can begin. While exploration is occurring, the secure base must continue to be maintained and strengthened. In this regard, interactive repair continues to be an important component in this phase. So, while the phases clearly overlap, it is useful to discuss the exploration phase in a discrete manner, so that the therapist can focus on the essential elements of exploration, the middle phase of treatment.

While all of the components of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy will be used in this phase and throughout treatment, the primary components of treatment in this phase involve the review of history leading to a healthier and more secure integration. These components include PACE, the creation of concordant intersubjective experiences, the reflective function, insightfulness, follow-lead-follow, interactive repair, commitment, co-creation of meaning, and the co-regulation of affect. Of these, I would focus on the co-creation of meaning and co-regulation of affect as having particular importance. As has been described previously, PACE leads to concordant intersubjectivity. Concordant intersubjectivity, interactive repair, and the reflective function help co-regulate emotions. The affective/reflective dialogue and insightfulness, along with PACE, facilitate the co-creation of meaning.

In this third phase of treatment the therapist will now have helped create a secure base allowing for exploration. As this exploration facilitates integration and the strengthening of the alliance, the therapist can continue to go deeper. While follow-lead-follow continues to be a useful component in this phase, and becomes more significant as more emotionally charged and difficult material is explored, the therapist can move more quickly into the lead element of this component than in previous phases. As material with stronger emotional valence is explored, interactive repair also gains salience.
